Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation presided Over Open Debate of the United Nations Security Council

The Honourable Hugh Hilton Todd, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation presided over the high-level Open Debate of the United Nations Security Council on “Poverty, underdevelopment, and conflict: implications for the maintenance of international peace and security,” on behalf of His Excellency, President Mohamed Irfaan Ali.
Guyana, during its second Presidency of the Security Council in June 2025, organised the high-level Open Debate in line with the overall theme of its tenure, “Partnering for Peace and Prosperity.”
Guyana during its first Presidency of the Security Council in February 2024, convened a signature event that was chaired by His Excellency, President Mohamed Irfaan Ali, in the form of a high-level open debate under the theme, “The Impact of Climate Change and Food Insecurity in the Maintenance of International Peace and Security.”

 Under the leadership of His Excellency President Ali, Guyana has championed five priority areas including climate change, food security, peace building and conflict resolution/prevention, women and global security, and youth and children in peace and security.

Guyana was elected as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for a term of two years from January 2024 to December 2025. Prior to its current term, Guyana served on the Council in 1975-1976 and 1982-1983.
