Over 1000 scholarships granted to Guyanese students since 2015 “Education is PIVOTAL for Individuals & Nations.”

Head of the Public Service, Reginald Brotherson

More and more Guyanese students and public servants are being exposed to scholarships and training opportunities provided by the Department of Public Service (DPS).

Permanent Secretary (PS) of DPS, Reginald Brotherson, at yesterday’s launch of the Department’s website explained that over 1000 students have benefited from local and overseas training since 2015. This figure represents a tremendous increase in the amount of Guyanese being granted scholarships as compared to previous years. From 2013 to 2014 only 138 scholarships were granted to Guyanese students.

For the period 2015-2017 two hundred and thirty-two (232) scholarships were granted for overseas training in one hundred and forty-five (145) fields of study. These ranged from Actuarial Science to Water Sanitation and Health Engineering in twenty-six (26) countries globally including Cuba, USA, China, England, and UWI campuses across the Caribbean.

Locally, for that same period, ninety-eight (98) fields of study ranging from Accountancy to Tourism saw some 1,031 students benefiting from scholarships.

The PS noted that “In the ten administrative regions, the scholarship awardees comprised 532 males and 690 females.”

The local scholarships were awarded to institutions such as the E.R. Burrowes School of Art, Air Services Limited Aeronautical Engineering School, Art Williams and Harry Went Aeronautical School, Carnegie School of Home Economics, Critchlow Labour College, Georgetown American University, Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, Government Technical Institute, Greenheart Medical University, Guyana School of Agriculture, Nations University, Ogle Aviation School, Texila American University, and the University of Guyana.

Scholarships are awarded for the completion of certificates, diplomas, bachelor degrees, postgraduate degrees and doctorates (PhD’s).
