Overview

The University of Guyana (UG) was established on October 1, 1963 following assent being given to the University of Guyana Ordinance on April 18, 1963, by Governor, Sir Ralph Grey.

When it opened its doors on October 2, 1963, UG functioned as an evening institution with only 164 students enrolled for classes in three Faculties – Arts, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences. Classes were held between 17:30h and 21:30h at the Government Technical Institute and Queen‟s College where laboratory facilities could be shared., University of Guyana is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the large town of Georgetown (population range of 50,000-249,999 inhabitants), Demerara-Mahaica. Officially accredited and/or recognized by the National Accreditation Council of Guyana, University of Guyana (UG) is a coeducational higher education institution. University of Guyana (UG) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as bachelor’s degrees in several areas of study. Entry Requirements

A minimum of five (5) CSEC General Proficiency (Grades I & II; and III from 1998) or five (5) passes at GCE ‘O’ Level (Grade A, B or C) and must include English Language and Mathematics.

Entry Requirements

Prospective students presenting Senior High School or Secondary school, or other advanced credentials will be placed into the appropriate semester. Placement is made based upon the evaluations and review of the applicant’s Senior High School transcripts which determines the appropriate entry point into the Pre-Medical Program. Applicants may also be required to take specific courses before qualifying to enter the Program.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS (a) If English is not the Principal Language the applicant must achieve a score of at least 600 on the paper based or 250 on the computer-based version of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). (b) Undergraduate level credits that include science foundation courses or a minimum of 30 undergraduate level credits that including a few natural science foundation courses or applicants must have a high school diploma with high academic achievement.

NORTH AMERICAN STUDENTS A minimum of 60 University/College undergraduate level credits that include all science foundation courses or a minimum of 30 University /college undergraduate level credits that include a fey science foundation courses or applicants must have a high school diploma with high academic achievement. High scores in the sciences and SAT are extremal important.

5-Year MD Program: LAU offers MD (Doctor of Medicine) Program which is based on US medical curriculum.[14] Curriculum duration of the program is 5 years. English is used as the language of instruction. Entire MD program is bifurcated into three sections or sub-programs:

I Pre-Medical Sciences or Basic Foundation for Medical Sciences Program: This program starts at the undergraduate level & span over a duration of 1 year. Pre-Medical Sciences forms the foundation for the MD Program & prepare the medical students to understand the next level of Basic Sciences & Pre-Clinical Program.

II Basic Sciences & Pre-Clinical Program: Basic Sciences is the second stage in the MD program and take 2 years to complete. During this program, students learn basic medical sciences, physical examination & diagnosis skills, principles of diseases, therapy and legal issues related to medical practice. This program prepares students for the Clinical Rotations Program.

III Clinical Rotations Program: Clinical Rotations Program or Clinical Sciences Program is the last stage in the MD Program span over a period of last 2 years of the MD program. During this program, students visit clinics & hospitals, deal with patients under guidance & learn how to record medical history or case history, perform a physical examination, and interpret findings. Clinical Rotations Program provides students to imbibe the clinical aspects of medicine and get hands-on experience in clinical practice.   1. The candidate must complete the age of 17 years on or before 31st December of the year of admission. To put it simply, if you are born on or before 31st December 2002, you can apply for 2019 intake.
  1. The candidate must have passed in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology and English individually and secure at least 50% aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects of 12th standard. Students belonging to the reserved category (OBC/SC/ST) get a relaxation of 10%. Further, physically challenged students in general/ unreserved category get relaxation of 5%. Programs

The medical degree program at Alexander American University, School of Medicine is for 5 years and includes 1 year of Pre-Medical Science, 2 years of Pre-Clinical Science followed by 2 years of Clinical Science.

Pre-Med Science Program

The program is intended to assist students who lack the necessary credit hours required for the MD Program. It provides the crucial fundamentals for the rigorous MD program. It consists of classes in Biology, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physics, English and Calculus. Students enroll in their first year and the duration is for 1 year.

Pre- Clinical Science Program

During the 2 years students learn the principles of disease, therapy, ethical and legal issues. The classes implement real-life problems that a doctor may encounter in the field. Students must identify, solve and prevent future cases. The core subjects are Anatomy, Biochemistry, Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology and Behavioral Science.

Students are also introduced to USMLE Step 1 course.

Clinical Science Program

The final 2 years of the program prepares students for their entry into the medical world. Students learn to analyse data, diagnose, conduct physicals, process blood work, etc. By the end of Clinical Science Program, students are able to determine their specialities. Upon successful completion of the program, the student will be awarded the degree of Doctor of Medicine.

Clinical Rotations

During the final 2 years, students complete their MD at any affiliated hospitals in the U.S, Canada and India. Admittance into the program is based on the student’s performance. The 72-80 weeks of Clinical Rotations are divided into 48 weeks of core rotations and 24-32 weeks of elective rotations.

The following is the admission procedure of the AAU:

Applicants will need to fill an application form of the AAU along with a non-refundable fee of 75$.

Acceptable Examinations

Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) – while MCAT is not compulsory, it may help the applicant gain admissions based on the score.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)  – measures the ability of nonnative  English speakers to understand and use English spoken, written, and heard in college and university settings. Students who may have completed high school or college/university program in English may not have to to take this exam. Please contact admission office if you have any questions into whether you may be required to take this exam. The minimum accepted score is 60.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) – similar to TOEFL, it tests students ability to communicate in English. The acceptable score is 6.0.

Statement of Financial Support. Applicants must provide a financial plan indicating adequate funding for the duration of the complete medical program.
If English is not the principal language, the applicant must have achieved a minimum score of 600 (paper-based), 250 (computer-based), or 100 (internet-based) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or a 7.0 overall score on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

For North American Applicants

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited university is required. Candidates accepted during the final year of undergraduate study are accepted with the assumption that their undergraduate degree will be completed before matriculation into the School of Medicine; candidates’ acceptance will be withdrawn if the degree is not obtained.
The following specific undergraduate coursework (or its equivalent) is required as part of the premedical program requirements for admission: one year General Biology or Zoology with lab; one year Inorganic Chemistry (General or Physical) with lab; one year Organic Chemistry with lab; one year of Physics with lab; one year of Math (Calculus, Computer Science, or Statistics); and one year of English. The Committee on Admission recommends courses in Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Physiology as preparation for medical school, and in today’s increasingly technical environment, a basic knowledge in the use of a computer is imperative.
Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is optional.

For British Applicants

A bachelor’s degree with a strong science background is necessary.
Applicants with passes at the Advanced Level of the General Certificate of Education will be assessed individually and will be considered for entry into Semester 3 of the premedical program.
